UEFA Europa League Report: Manchester United v AC Milan 11 March 2021

Result: Manchester United 1-1 AC Milan

Date: 11 March 2021

Venue: Old Trafford

AC Milan struck late in the second half to secure a vital away goal against Manchester United in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League last encounter at Old Trafford.

Man United were without Marcus Rashford and Edinson Cavani due to injury as Mason Greenwood returned to the side while Milan could also not call upon Zlatan Ibrahimovic owing to injury against his former side.

Franck Kessie thought he had given the Rossoneri the lead in the 11th minute with a stunning volley from the edge of the box, but the goal was disallowed after the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) spotted that he controlled the ball with his hand from a throw-in.

Alexis Saelemakers also had a chance to break the deadlock for the visitors on the half-hour mark after cutting inside the box but his strike at the near post was parried away by shot-stopper Dean Henderson.

Harry Maguire should have given Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's charges the lead seven minutes before the break after latching onto a flicked header by Bruno Fernandes at the back post but the ball hit his shin and struck the post from a yard out.

United had a perfect start in the second stanza as Amad Diallo, who replaced Anthony Martial just after half-time finally gave them the lead five minutes from the break with a superb header after a teasing ball over the top by Fernandes.

Rade Krunic should have levelled matters for Stefano Pioli's charges in the 64th minute after attacking a cross ahead of Aaron Wan-Bissaka at the back post but his header missed agonisingly wide.

Daniel James had an almost similar chance for the Red Devils in the last 18 minutes after Greenwood whipped in a dangerous cross to the back post but he guided his shot wide.

Kessie had a great chance to snatch the equaliser for Milan in the last nine minutes after meeting a cross with a diving header inside the box but his effort missed wide.

Simon Kjaer eventually got the equaliser for the Rossoneri in stoppage time and a precious away goal with a looping header past the hand of Henderson after a corner by Krunic.
