United were down 1-0 in the 27th minute as Pione Sisto beat both Blind and Michael Carrick on the edge of the area before slotting past Romero with a measured strike. The hosts should have been ahead just after the break as Depay sent a cross towards the far post where Herrera was waiting for it, but his headed effort found the side netting. Louis van Gaal's charges got their second goal in the 63rd minute. Varela's cross caused havoc and found Mata who played it back into the danger area where Marcus Rashford was on hand to thump it home. The Red Devils went 4-3 ahead on aggregate in the 75th minute when Rashford completed his brace. Varela combined with Mata again to set it up for the debutant who fired home at the far post. United were awarded a penalty again just before the end when Hansen handled the ball in the area, giving Herrera the chance to slot it from the spot. The victory was finished off with style in the 90th minute as Depay strolled towards the opponent's area before blasting a low strike into the bottom corner of the goal.
