According to the Spanish publication Don Balon, the Portuguese tactician is desperate to sign Colombian attacking midfielder James Rodriguez.
It is rumoured that the Real star is unhappy with his salary at the Spanish club and wants an increase that will see him earn the same amount of Sergio Ramos and Gareth Bale.
It is said that Los Blancos will not fall for the player's demands and his agent Jorge Mendes has already started looking for other options for his client.
Mourinho, who is also represented by the super-agent, has reportedly asked executive vice-chairman Ed Woordward to sit down with Mendes.
According to the same report, Real have set the Colombian's price tag at £72 million (R1.3 billion), which seems a figure that would scare many suitors away.
Rodriguez has also been linked with the likes of Paris St-Germain, Juventus, Chelsea and Arsenal in recent months.
