The Portuguese tactician is reportedly chasing the signature of 18-year-old midfielder Carles Alena, who joined Barcelona when he was just eight.
The Blaugrana starlet, who is yet to make a first team appearance for the Catalan giants, has a €50 million (R750 million) release clause in his current contract.
He starred for Barcelona in the UEFA Youth Champions League last season, but has not been involved in this season's games because his level is already too high for the competition, according to ESPN.
He has been compared to Andres Iniesta due to his style of play, and named the Barca midfielder as his idol in a recent interview with Sport.
"Iniesta is my idol, he's spectacular, he's the best player Barcelona has. He makes the difference," Alena said.
Mourinho reportedly wants to lure him to United before he can cement a spot in Barca's first team, although manager Luis Enrique has already called him up to the senior squad a few times. He also featured in the Catalan Super Cup against Espanyol.

Alena could follow in the footsteps of players such as Gerard Pique, Hector Bellerin and Cesc Fabregas, who came through Barcelona's famous La Masia academy but left the club before breaking into the first team.
