Mohamed Salah broke an impressive record as Liverpool rallied from behind to defeat Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-1 in Premier League action on Saturday afternoon.

Premier League

Result: Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-3 Liverpool

Date: 16 September 2023

Venue: Molineux Stadium

The Reds were without Trent Alexander-Arnold as Joe Gomez started at right-back while  Jarell Quansah made his full debut for the Reds at centre-back as Virgil van Dijk remains out injured.

The hosts got off to the perfect start when Pedro Neto weaved his way into the box before picking out Hwang Hee-Chan, who sent a first-time finish into the back of the net at the far post.

While Jurgen Klopp's charges struggled to carve out chances, Wolves should have had a second goal in the 33rd minute when Neto skipped past Gomez before sending a perfect cross from Cunha, who failed to make proper contact in the six-yard area.

Liverpool had to wait until the final five minutes for a sight at the Wolves goal when Gomez did well to pick out Cody Gakpo, who rose above his marker but sent his header over the crossbar.

Klopp responded a single change at the start of the second half, as Alexis Mac Allister, who had been quite sloppy on the ball, made way for Luis Diaz.

The visitors did get back on level terms ten minutes into the break when some neat passing in and around the area ended with Gakpo turning home a cross from Mohamed Salah for his first league goal of the campaign.

Salah has now overtaken Riyad Mahrez's assist record with 62, meaning no African player has created more goal in Premier League history than the Egyptian.

That proved to be Gakpo's last involvement as the Dutch forward made way for Darwin Nunez, while Klopp also threw on on Harvey Elliot for Diogo Jota to freshen up the midfield area for the final 30 minutes.

The Reds would go on to get the go-ahead goal in the 85th minute when Andrew Robertson combined with Salah in the final before slotting home at the near post on his 200th appearance for the club.

There would be a third goal in the 90th minute when Salah turned provider once again to lay the ball off for Elliot, who saw his first-time strike deflect into the back of the net as the Reds claimed maximum points.
