Salah Breaks 2 Records As Man Utd Deny Liverpool Top Spot

Liverpool failed to reclaim top spot in the Premier League after an entertaining 2-2 draw against arch-rivals Manchester United on Sunday.

Report: Manchester United 2-2 Liverpool

Date: 07 April 2024

Venue: Old Trafford

Willy Kambwalla came into the Red Devils defence alongside Harry Maguire as Raphael Varane missed out through injury, while Marcus Rashford replaced Antony in the attack.

Just as the entertaining FA Cup game three weeks ago, the game got off to a lively start as Alejandro Garnacho had a goal disallowed for offside while Dominik Szoboszlai was denied by a superb by Andre Onana at the other end.

The tempo of the game began to slow down, although Jurgen Klopp's charges enjoyed more of the possession but found it tough to carve out any serious chances at Onana's goal.

The Reds, however, got the opening goal on 22 minutes when Darwin Nunez's flick on at the near post found an un-marked Luis Diaz, who volleyed home from six yards out.

It was unfortunately one-way traffic in the first half as the visitors were finding it easy to get through United's midfield, while the home side did not register a single effort in the opening 45 minutes.

After a disappointing first half, United were gifted the equaliser when Bruno Fernandes pounced on Jarral Quansah's poor pass and lobbed Caoimhin Kelleher from 40 yards out with a first-time strike.

Liverpool should have restored their lead before the hour mark on a swift counter-attack which ended with Diaz picking out Nunez, who failed to convert at the far post.

The visitors were made to rue that miss as the Red Devils in the 67th minute when Kobbie Mainoo collected a pass from Aaron Wan-Bissaka and turned well before curling one into the top corner.

Klopp responded with a double change after the goal as Nunez and Wataru Endo made way for Cody Gakpo and Harvey Elliot, who was on target in the FA Cup a few weeks ago.

Elliot did make the impact when he won a penalty in the 82nd minute after being brought down by Wan-Bissaka. Salah stepped up and calmly slotted home to level matters with eight minutes to go.

Salah has now become the first visiting player to score in four consecutive league games at Old Trafford and he has also scored more goals (11) against United than any other player in the competition's history.
