Result: Liverpool 1-1 West Bromwich Albion
Date: 27 December 2020
Venue: Anfield
Liverpool dropped points at Anfield for the first time in the Premier League this season after playing to a 1-1 draw with struggling West Bromwich Albion.
Sadio Mane gave Liverpool the lead in the 12th minute when the Senegal forward chested down Joel Matip's ball forward and slotted it first-time past Johnstone.
Ten minutes later, Trent Alexander-Arnold drilled in a low cross from the right. Georginio Wijnaldum skipped over it and it rolled close to Sadio Mane but Darnell Furlong did just enough to block and prevent Mane from grabbing his second goal of the game with the shot going wide.
Liverpool continued to pepper West Brom's goal. Mohammed Salah took down the ball in the box and laid off to Firmino but the Brazilian's shot from outside the box was blocked.
West Brom had the next big chance. Salah's cross was cleared by Sawyers who sent Grant through on goal and he burst into the box and shot but Alisson rushed out and made the block with his legs.
The Baggies were playing in typical Sam Allardyce fashion, committing niggly fouls and doing well to slow down the tempo of Liverpool's game.
Alexander-Arnold wasn't too far from finding the top left corner in the 78th minute. It was a better effort than his first half free-kick as it curled just over Sam Johnstone's goal.
West Brom got the equaliser they had been looking for. Matheus Pereira took the corner short and received it back, whipping in a fantastic inswinging cross and Ajayi rode high to power it in off the right-hand post to claim a share of the spoils.
