Mohamed Salah continued his fine form after guiding Liverpool to a 2-0 win over rivals Everton in the Merseyside derby on Saturday afternoon.

Premier League

Result: Liverpool 2-0 Everton

Date: 21 October 2023

Venue: Anfield

Jurgen Klopp opted to start Diogo Jota in the attack ahead of Darwin Nunez, while Ibrahima Konate, Kostas Tsimikas and Ryan Gravenberch were also recalled to the line-up.

The opening exchanges proved to be quite a cagey affair as both sides kept things tight at the back in the opening 20 minutes of the first half.

While chances were hard to come by, the Toffees' task was made even tougher when they were reduced to ten men after Ashley Young was shown his second yellow card of the game and given an early shower.

Despite the numerical advantage, Klopp's men struggled to carve out any clear-cut chances as Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dominik Szoboszlai tried their luck from distance but couldn't find the target.

It was more of the same in the second half as the Reds found it tough to break down the Toffees, which saw Klopp introduce Darwin Nunez and Harvey Elliot for Tsimikas and Gravenberch on the hour mark.

Liverpool were given a life line in the 72nd minute after being awarded a penalty for Michael Keane's handball in the box. Salah stepped up and slammed home the spot-kick to give his side the lead.

The Reds nearly bagged a second goal in the final three minutes but Elliot saw his powerful strike tipped onto the crossbar by goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

With Everton pushing for the equaliser, The home side did get their second goal as a swift counter attack ended with Nunez teeing up Salah for the first-time finish to seal the win.

It was also Salah's 105th goal at Anfield, which sees overtake club legends Steven Gerrard and Kenny Dalglish.
