The Blues confirmed Rahman's signature on Sunday after their 3-0 defeat to Manchester City and Mourinho is hopeful the African can bring more balance to squad.
"It's important because he's a left back and he can compete with Azpilicueta," Mourinho told the Daily Star.
"At the same time, Azpi can also compete with Ivanovic for the right back position.
"This player replaces Filipe Luis in terms of the balance of the squad.
"Hopefully next week he will be ready."
Rahman revealed it was a tricky decision to leave Bundesliga side Augsburg, but is looking forward to working with the Portuguese tactician at his new club.
"I have made this decision and it is really not easy because I felt good at Augsburg," the Ghanaian defender told Augsburg's official website.
"But the move to England is a very big opportunity for me to play at a top club like Chelsea, so I would like to take this step.
"I am very happy to sign for Chelsea, one of the biggest clubs in the world, and I can't wait to train with my new teammates and very much looking forward to working with them and Mr Mourinho."
