'Haaland Could've Been A Liverpool Player'

Erling Haaland

Now scoring for fun at Manchester City, it all could have been so different for Erling Haaland, with a former scout revealing that Liverpool had the opportunity to sign the prolific marksman.

Why Mane Chose Bayern Over Liverpool Revealed?

The 22-year-old has been the most lethal striker in all of Europe since first donning the sky blue of City, with the forward having already found the back of the net 13 times in nine appearances in all competitions this season. The 60 million (R1 billion) spent by the Premier League champions to sign looks to already be proving to be a shrewd piece of business.

However, the English top flight might have had a different complexion to it had other Premier League giants swooped on the opportunity to sign the Scandinavian when he was still at Molde. According to John Vik, a former scout of the Norwegian side, some top English teams were interested in the striker while he was still cutting his teeth in his homeland.

"Liverpool could have got him. Arsenal could have got him," Vik told The Athletic.

"Everyone was there to watch him but these clubs were seeing a No. 9 who was tall and broad, and, 'Oh, he's going to be a target man'.

"I couldn't for the life of me see why they had narrowed him down that way."

He added that he believes the aforementioned clubs are kicking themselves today seeing the heights Haaland has reached so far.

Report: Barca Still Keen On Selling Star

It was RB Salzburg that acquired Haaland after his Molde adventure, with the hitman subsequently moving to Borussia Dortmund, before making the switch to the country where he was born to join City in the latest transfer window.

The player has broken a few records since, and in the Citizens' most recent victory over his former side Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League this weekend, Haaland became the youngest player in UCL history to score for and against the same side in the competition, as per Opta Sports.
