10 Highest-Spending Managers Of All Time

10 Highest-Spending Managers Of All Time

1. Jose Mourinho – €1.10bn

With Jose Mourinho yet to make any new signings at his new club, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola could close the gap between himself and the Portuguese in the January transfer window with one or two signings. Here are the 10 highest-spending bosses in history!

Click through the gallery above to see the 10 managers who have spent the most on players in their careers, according to Transfermarkt.

Interestingly, upon his appointment at Tottenham Hotspur, Mourinho insisted that he does not need players, suggesting he is more than happy with the squad given to him. That might change, however, if one or two players leave the club, which could be in January.

At his five previous clubs – Porto, Inter Milan, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Manchester United – Mourinho has spent €1.10 billion (R17.8 billion) on 53 players, making him the highest-spending boss in world football.

Just behind the 56-year-old is Guardiola, arguably his biggest managerial rival in the game. The Spaniard, who has worked previously at FC Barcelona and Bayern Munich, has spent €1.05 billion (R17 billion) since 2008, something he is often criticised for.

The 48-year-old tactician has been accused of many times of spending money to solve his problems, but how many players has he bought compared to Mourinho? Guardiola has signed 45 players in 11 years, while the Spurs boss has signed 53 since 2000.

Third on the list is former Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri on €1.01 billion (R16.35), making him only the third boss in world football to have breached the €1 billion (R16.19 mark. The Italian has signed 82 players at three different clubs, though he has worked at more clubs where he has not spent money.
