OPINION: Brazil Still Rebuilding Ahead Of Copa America

OPINION: Brazil Still Rebuilding Ahead Of Copa America

Even though Brazil were able to beat England away from home this past weekend, there is still a lot of rebuilding to do ahead of the Copa America at the end of the season.

This past weekend, the Selecao were able to snap a three-match losing run against the Three Lions as a second-half goal from Endrick ensured that they left Wembley Stadium with a 1-0 victory. It was not the most enthralling affair at what is known as the home of football, with Gareth Southgate's charges fading away as the game went on.

The record FIFA World Cup champions maintained their attacking threat in the game's second stanza and ultimately their pressure told as their latest wonderkid scored a history-making goal to seal the tie for his team.

Both teams were missing a plethora of their top players through injury, especially Brazil. They were playing in England, but many of their Premier League stars were out of action. Arsenal's three Gabriel's did make the squad, Martinelli and Magalhaes out through knocks while Jesus was not selected altogether. The Manchester duo of United's Casemiro and City's Ederson were missing in action too, while Liverpool's Allison is also nursing an injury.

The nation's all-time top goalscorer Neymar is still sidelined with a knee injury, but the fact that a 17-year-old was the reason the South Americans were able to win for the first time in England since 1995 speaks to where the great footballing nation are as a team.

Brazil are still rebuilding as they look to return to the summit of world football. The players that started this past weekend for them only had 191 caps between them, which emphasises the lack of experience currently at the disposal at Dorival Junior, who himself is inexperienced when it comes to international football.

Gone are the days where the five-time world champions had multiple Ballon d'Or winners in the same team, now Brazil are in the process of building a new generation of world beaters, with the emergence of the Palmeiras man indicative of that.

This was Dorival Junior's first match in charge of his nation, and it was a good start for him, but with no further international breaks between now and the Copa America in the United States of America, the 61-year-old has a small sample size of what his team are capable of.

As always with such a footballing powerhouse, the expectation will be to go all the way and avenge their 2021 final loss to Argentina, but given the youth and relative collective international inexperience, it is hard to envisage a Brazil team which will be triumphant in Miami on 14 July 2023.

The likes of Marquinhos and the aforementioned are still to come back for the Samba Boys and that will definitely go a long way in increasing their chances of winning the competition, but it feels as though they are only at the beginning stages of a new dawn with this manager and these players so fans should not expect too much for them in the near future.
