Copa America Report: Argentina 1-0 Jamaica 20 June 2015

Copa America - Group C

Result: Argentina 1-0 Jamaica

Date: 20 June 2015

Venue: Estadio Sausalito

Gonzalo Higuain's first half strike was enough to hand Argentina a 1-0 win over Jamaica and seal a spot in the quarterfinals of the Copa America.

Despite scoring the winner against Uruguay, Sergio dropped to the bench for Higuain, while Lionel Messi made his 100th appearance for the side.

It didn't take long for Gerardo Martino's side to open the scoring, as Higuain collected a pass from Angel di Maria, before firing into the bottom corner in the 10th minute.

The Napoli striker nearly doubled the lead in the 22nd minute but his lob crashed onto the crossbar with Jamaican goalkeeper well beaten.

Jamaica were presented with a chance to level matters in the 30th minute but defender Wes Morgan managed head over from close range, after getting on the end of a flick-on.

Argentina came close to doubling the lead in the 38th minute when Di Maria broke free from a Jamaica corner but the winger's eventual effort was cleared off the line.

Dwayne Miller came to Jamaica's rescue just before the halftime break, as the Jamaican shot-stopper did well to keep out Di Maria's stinging effort from the edge of the area.

Di Maria was proving to be a real handful for the Jamaicans and he nearly doubled Argentina's lead in the 52nd minute when rattled the crossbar with a fine effort from 20-yards out.

It was one way traffic as far as chances were concerned and Messi nearly got his name on the score-sheet but Miller was on hand to keep out the Argentine skipper's lob on the hour mark.

Martino's charges were in full control for most of the second half but they struggled to breakdown the Jamaican defence.

Despite the introduction of Carlos Tevez and Erik Lamela, the score remained 1-0 at the full-time whistle, as Argentina secured top spot in Group B.

Other result:

Meanwhile, both Uruguay and Paraguay progressed to the quarterfinals, despite playing out a 1-1 draw on Saturday evening.

Paraguay finished as runners-up in Group B, while Uruguay clinched third but progressed as one of the two best third-placed teams.
