Eight-time Copa America champions Brazil were knocked out the 2016 tournament in controversial style on Monday morning, after losing 1-0 to Peru.

The Selecao looked the better side in the opening minutes of the match, with left back Filipe Luis getting the first shot on target after 13 minutes.

Brazil had a penalty appeal turned down just six minutes later, but the match official deemed the challenge a fair one. Philippe Coutinho burst into the box and went down after contact from Christian Ramos, but the referee felt the defender rightfully stood his ground.

The spotlight was on Ramos again in the 25th minute when the Brazilians appealed for yet another spot kick. Lucas Lima went down after a challenge from the right back, but the referee waved away the appeals.

Just before the break, it was Peru asking the official for a penalty, after Edison Flores was brought down unfairly by Renato Augusto. The referee was unmoved though, but appeared to get this decision wrong.

Peru came out strong in the second half, looking the better side in the opening 10 minutes thereof, with Brazil giving the ball away carelessly in midfield, and putting themselves under unnecessary pressure.

Selecao fans were becoming increasingly worried that Peru were going to make something of their momentum, and their fears became a reality in the 75th minute.

Raul Ruidiaz bundled the ball over the line for the Peruvians after brilliant work on the wing by Andy Polo, but the goalscorer seemed to slap the ball into the back of the net with his hand.

The Brazilians appealed the goal furiously, but, after much deliberation between the referee and his linesman, Peru were awarded the goal.

Dunga's men could not get the strike that would keep them in the tie, and were knocked out of the Copa in the group stages in controversial style.
