Capital One Cup
First Leg Semifinal
Full Time: Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 Sheffield United
Date: 21 January 2015
Venue: White Hart Lane
A single penalty goal from Andros Townsend earned Tottenham Hotspur the slenderest of advantages after beating Sheffield United 1-0 in a first leg Capital One Cup semifinal match at White Hart Lane.
The second leg will take place next week Wednesday at Bramall Lane.
Sheffield United started the better of the two teams and created their first chance on goal in the fourth minute when Ryan Flynn broke into the box and was superbly denied by the keeper in a one-on-one.
In the 22nd minute the visitors came close again when Julian Campbell-Ryce danced his way into the Spurs box, but fired his low 14-yard shot from an acute angle just wide.
Two minutes later Spurs created their first real chance of the half when Eric Dier met a right-wing cross from Townsend, but the keeper produced a great save to turn his 12-yard header around the post.
In the 34th minute Emmanuel Adebayor should really have given the home side the lead when he latch onto a long ball into the box, but despite his impeccable control the striker fired over from ten-yards out.
Spurs controlled the remainder of the half, but could not break the deadlock.
The same pattern continued at the start of the second half, but Sheffield United defended stubbornly and continued to frustrate the Spurs attack.
Finally, in the 73rd minute the home side found some reward for their pressure when the referee awarded them penalty after James McEveley handled the ball inside the box.
Townsend stepped up and made no mistake from the spot, 1-0.
Spurs continued to dictate terms after that, but they could not add to their goal tally.
