Capital One Cup Report: Manchester City 0-2 Newcastle United 29 October 2014

Moussa Sissoko

Manchester City were dumped out of the Capital One Cup after losing 2-0 to Newcastle United at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night.

Depsite facing Manchester United on Sunday, City boss Manuel Pellegrini started the likes of Yaya Toure, David Silva, Edin Dzeko and Fernandinho.

However, Pellegrini was made to rue his decision to start with Silva, as he was taken off midway through the first half with an injury.

Newcastle took a surprising lead inside the opening five minutes, as Rolando Aarons pounced a loose ball before slotting under Willy Caballero

City almost leveled matters int he 26th minute, as Newcastle defender Fabricio Coloccini's attempted block on Stefan Jovetic's effort crashed against the upright.

Newcastle almost added a third just after the 30 minute mark, as Paul Dummet found some space in the box before seeing his effort denied by Caballero.

City looked the likeliest to score in the second half, but it was the visitors who doubled their lead in the 75th minute thanks to a brilliant solo effort from Moussa Sissoko.

Alan Pardew's men survived a late surge from the defending champions, who brought on Sergio Aguero and Jesus Navas, to book their spot in the next round.
