A superior first half from Manchester City saw them demolish Sunderland 4-0 in a Capital One Cup, Round Three match at the Stadium of Light on Tuesday night.
City were afforded the perfect scoring opportunity in the ninth minute when Patrick van Aanholt brought down Jesus Navas inside the box and the referee pointed to the penalty spot.
Sergio Aguero stepped up for the away side and made no mistake from the spot, 1-0.
In the 25th minute City doubled their lead when Raheem Sterling slipped Kevin de Bruyne through on goal and he fired home from an acute angle on the right, 2-0.
Eight minutes later City found their third goal after a goalmouth scramble at a corner-kick resulted in Sterling poking the ball onto the post which then ricocheted onto the back of goalkeeper Vito Mannone an into his own net, 3-0.
The match was over as a contest in the 36th minute De Bruyne turned provider as he played Sterling through on goal and he produced a clinical finish to make it 4-0 at the break.
City took their foot off the pedal in the second half and created very little in front of goal.
Sunderland, nonetheless, pushed forward and managed to find an equaliser in the 83rd minute when Ola Toivonen touched home a cross from DeAndre Yedlin, 4-1.
The loss sees Sunderland exit the Capital One Cup while City move on.
