Bundesliga Report: Hertha Berlin v Union Berlin 22 May 2020

Result: Hertha Berlin 4-0 Union Berlin

Date: 22 May 2020

Venue: Olympiastadion Berlin

Hertha Berlin claimed the bragging rights in the Berlin derby after thumping Union Berlin 4-0 in Friday night's only Bundesliga encounter.

One change from Hertha following the win over Hoffenheim saw Maximilian Mittelstadt making way for Vladimir Darida, whilst Sebastian Andersson made a welcome return for the visitors.

Hertha showed confidence earlier on, although they were nearly behind when Christopher Trimmel's free-kick landed onto the top of the net after connecting with a defender.

The hosts began asserting more authority as Matheus Cunha's low shot from the right forced Rafal Gikiewicz to a save on 27 minutes, with Liverpool loanee Marko Grujic going wide off the head seconds later.

Cunha threatened again just before the break, but Gikiewicz produced another block whilst Marcus Ingvartsen went close at the other end.

Eager to avoid a second league defeat at the hands of their city rivals, Hertha grabbed the lead six minutes after halftime when Vedad Ibisevic turned home Marvin Plattenhardt's cross.

It was two within a minute after Ibisevic turned provider to pick out Dodi Lukeabakio, who fired home from the right side of the area following a quick break away.

Ingvartsen was hauled off following the 57th minute in place of Nigerian striker Anthony Ujah as Urs Fischer's charges prepared a comeback.

The damage however didn't stop as Cunha gave his side a third goal with a strong finish off another assist by Ibisevic four minutes later.

Union looked to get back into the game afterwards, but Dedryck Boyata rounded off the scoring for the home side with a pin-point header in the final 12 minutes following Plattenhardt's corner to get revenge for the early-season loss.
