Bavarians head coach Hansi Flick made just two changes from the win over Union Berlin, with Thiago Alcantara and Serge Gnabry making way for Kinglsey Coman and Ivan Perisic.

The league's top scorer Robert Lewandowski nearly picked up from where he left off last weekend as the Bayern striker rattled the frame of the goal in the 11th minute, with the help of Kevin Trapp's fingertips.

Bayern got their reward five minutes later as Thomas Muller's well-weighted cross found Leon Goretzka, who found the back of the net with an impressive first-time finish.

Frankfurt did show a bit of fight after going behind but they lacked the final pass to cause any real concern to the Bayern defence for most of the half.

Bayern, however, were able to bag another goal just before the halftime break as Muller secured a goal to go with his assist after turning home Alponso Davies' cross.

The game exploded into life after the break after Lewandowski added a third goal for Bayern seconds after the restart with a neat header off Coman's cross.

The visitors then managed to pull a goal back in the 52nd minute through Martin Hinteregger, who pounced on Jerome Boatengs's poor clearance to fire past Manuel Neuer.

The deficit was reduced was on again three minutes, with Hinteregger completing his brace with a powerful header past Neuer from Sebastian Rode's corner.

However, just when Frankfurt felt the comeback was on, Bayern registered a fourth goal just after the hour mark as Fernandes' error at the back led to Davies calmly slotting home.

The game was put beyond Frankfurt's reach with 15 minutes remaining as Hinteregger bundled the ball into his own net after Kevin Trapp was unable to hold Gnabry's strike to seal a 5-2 win.

Bayern will now head into Tuesday's encounter with second-place Borussia Dortmund four points clear at the summit.
