Who Cristiano Ronaldo & Other Stars Believe Should Win Ballon d'Or

Cristiano Ronaldo: "So, let's say Mohamed Salah, Luka Modric, Antoine Griezmann, Raphael Varane, Kylian Mbappe – the French in general because they are world champions."

With the 2018 Ballon d'Or set to be handed out tonight, we had a look at predictions made by some of the favourites to lift this year's Golden Ball and some high-profile names in the football fraternity, including Cristiano Ronaldo, who snubbed longstanding rival Lionel Messi.

The race for this year's award seems to be more open than usual, with reports suggesting that Ronaldo and Lionel Messi's 10-year reign of the prize could end.

France Football's ceremony will take place at 22:00 in Paris tonight, and you can follow all the updates on Soccer Laduma.

Ronaldo, who won the award in the past two years, recently named five players he thinks are in the running for the 2018 edition, but snubbed Messi.

"So, let's say Mohamed Salah, Luka Modric, Antoine Griezmann, Raphael Varane, Kylian Mbappe – the French in general because they are world champions," Ronaldo told France Football.

Many expect Luka Modric to complete his 2018 awards hat-trick and end the Messi-Ronaldo reign after already picking up the UEFA Player of the Year and FIFA's The Best Men's Player awards.

The Croatian himself, though, has tipped Antoine Griezmann to lift the coveted Golden Ball.

"I would put Antoine Griezmann in pole position, in terms of the three Frenchmen, for all he has achieved this year," Modric told France Football.

Raphael Varane is another favourite for this year's accolade, with the Real Madrid defender being the only nominee to win both the UEFA Champions League and the FIFA World Cup this year – and Varane himself has insisted he could not have had a better year.

"There are many extraordinary players who have had a magnificent season. I have done everything I can," he said, as quoted by France Football.
