Following Karim Benzema's 2022 Ballon d'Or victory in Paris on Monday night, another Real Madrid star seemed to take aim at the final ranking.
Mane Makes Ballon D'Or History With Podium Finish
Although it was a good night for Los Blancos and all those associated with the 14-time UEFA Champions League winners, goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois admitted his displeasure with the final ranking after the ceremony in Paris.
The Belgium shot-stopper finished in seventh place, behind the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Mohamed Salah and Robert Lewandowski, despite playing an important role in Real's trophy-laden 2021/22 campaign.
Courtois did walk away with the Yashin Trophy, an accolade given to the best goalkeeper of the previous season, but did not appear all that pleased with how the evening went for him overall.
"I see the Ballon d'Or as impossible to win," he said, according to the Daily Mirror.
"You win LaLiga and you win the Champions League, your team wins thanks to your saves... and you only finish seventh.
"At least they created the trophy for best goalkeeper."
Courtois kept an impressive 16 clean sheets in his 36 LaLiga appearances last season, while he was named the Man of the Match after Real beat Liverpool in the Champions League final.
The 30-year-old made the final top 10 along with teammates winner Benzema, Vinicius Junior and Luka Modric, who finished in eighth and ninth place, respectively.
