The Ballon d'Or ceremony took place in Paris on Monday evening, with Luka Modric being announced as 2018 winner of the Golden Ball.

The Croatian completed his awards hat-trick after lifting the UEFA Player of the Year accolade and FIFA's The Best Men's Player prize earlier this year.

Modric replaces Ronaldo, who had claimed the past two Golden Balls, as the latest winner of the award after lifting the UEFA Champions League with Real Madrid and guiding his country to its first ever FIFA World Cup final at Russia 2018.

The 33-year-old also won the UEFA Super Cup, the Supercopa de Espana and the FIFA Club World Cup last season, and was named the Player of the Tournament at both the Club World Cup and the FIFA World Cup as well.

He became the first player other than Messi or Ronaldo to lift the coveted trophy since Ricardo Kaka won the award in 2007.
