Luka Modric won the award last season, ending the 10-year reign of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, but the Croatian did not make this year's shortlist.
Ronaldo and Messi, however, were named among the nominees, who were selected by a panel of Fifa legends and announced on Wednesday.
The Portugal captain won the Serie A and Supercoppa Italiana titles in his debut season at Juventus plus the Uefa Nations League with Portugal, while Messi lifted the LaLiga trophy with FC Barcelona and also claimed the European Golden Shoe.

This year's award, though, seems to be very open with Liverpool also having a few representatives on the shortlist. Many expected Virgil van Dijk, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah to be in contention for the 2019 accolade and all three have made the shortlist.
They did win the Uefa Champions League with Liverpool and finished runner-up in the Premier League, with the Dutchman being named Premier League Player of the Season, while the African duo shared the Golden Boot with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. You can find all 10 nominees in the gallery above!
