The biggest talking point was arguably the inclusion of Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane, who was named due to his contribution as Spurs reached their first Uefa Champions League final ever, in addition to scoring 17 Premier League goals and helping England reach the Uefa Nations League semi-finals, according to Fifa.
Kane, though, is the only player on the shortlist who did not win a trophy in 2018/19 – not even an individual one – and was also absent with injury for 91 days, and 17 games, last season.

Meanwhile, other more deserving players such as Bernardo Silva or Alisson Becker were snubbed. The former won the domestic treble with Manchester City and was named the Player of the Tournament as Portugal won the Uefa Nations League final, while the latter also has a huge claim to not only be on the shortlist, but win the award altogether.
Becker helped Liverpool lift the Uefa Champions League and won the Premier League Golden Glove as the Reds finished runners-up in the English top flight, before helping Brazil claim the Copa America, while conceding a competition low of just one goal.

Riyad Mahrez is another player omitted from the shortlist despite winning trophies with both his club and country. The City winger was part of the squad that won the 2018/19 Premier League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup trophies, and also captained Algeria to their recent Africa Cup of Nations triumph.
