10 Stars Who Were Snubbed For Ballon d'Or Shortlist

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo headline the 30-man shortlist for this year's Ballon d'Or award, but there were some notable absentees, including last year's winner.

For the first time in history, the defending champion is not on the shortlist the following year, with Luka Modric now holding this unwanted record.

After impressing during the 2018 FIFA World Cup and throughout the calendar year, he struggled to find his best form in the 2018/19 campaign. His poor performances in large parts of this year have not helped Real Madrid much, seemingly resulting in Modric's failure to make the shortlist.

Meanwhile, Neymar was among the nominees eight years in a row, but is now absent for the first time since 2011.

He finished in third place in 2015 and 2017, but his major injury lay-off that saw him miss Brazil's 2019 Copa America win saw him being omitted by the editors of France Football.

Paul Pogba made the shortlist in four out of the past five years, and achieved his personal best returns in a campaign in 2018/19. However, a drop in form since the start of the new season and Manchester United's overall poor results saw him fail to make the cut too.
