This past weekend, the Egyptian side made history by becoming the 27th team, according to Transfermarkt, to win the CAF Champions League for the first time in their history, as a 3–2 aggregate victory over Mamelodi Sundowns earned them the honour of being called kings of the continent.
However, they achieved this feat while being listed under FIFA’s catalogue of clubs banned from registering new players. The ban was imposed in connection with 22-year-old Tolulope Samuel Ojo.
The Nigerian youth international spent just over a year and a half at the Cairo club but, at the start of the 2024/25 campaign, completed a permanent transfer to Egyptian side El Gouna. According to FilGoal, the reason was that the player failed to obtain an electronic passport on the FIFA website.
It is alleged that the concept of the electronic passport is a new implementation by world football’s governing body to document youth players’ transition to professional status, and Ojo did not obtain this during his time with the club.

The same report claims that the case has been lifted by the Switzerland-based institution and that their disciplinary committee has settled the matter, sending a letter to the club. However, the letter also stated that if there are any other outstanding issues, their name will remain on the registration ban list and the restriction will persist.
