The Egyptian Premier League title fight went down to the last game of the season as Al Ahly faced Pharco and Pyramids battled Ceramica Cleopatra, with the Red Devils holding a slender two-point lead.
Both sides were dominant as the Red Giant ran out 6-0 winners, while the Sky Blues triumphed 5-1 meaning Al Ahly were crowned league champions for a record-extending 45th time.
Following their match, a source revealed Pyramids players and staff reportedly stayed on the pitch and started celebrating as if the team had won the league, according to Al-Masry Al-Youm.
The scenes afterward were reportedly labelled "premature" and "inappropriate". The source explained why the team stayed behind.
"We are champions," he said. "We’ve had a remarkable season, we’re representing Egypt in the final of the continent’s most prestigious competition, and we’re still in the Egypt Cup final."
He continued: "We don’t see today as losing the league title. We’ve filed an official complaint with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), and we’re confident a ruling will correct the current situation."
Pyramids, along with Zamalek, submitted a request to the CAS for Al Ahly to be docked three points for failing to honour the derby clash against the White Castle. However, the court ruled in Al Ahly's favour and said Zamalek would just be awarded the 3-0 win.
