Players 'Warned' Against Joining Saudi Teams, Pitso's Club In Firing Line

Footballers have been warned against joining clubs in Saudi Arabia, with Pitso Mosimane's Al Ahli one of the teams accused of failing to pay player wages.

According to a report in the Daily Mirror, FIFPro, the union representing more than 65 000 players around the world, has issued a warning to those who might be interested in taking their careers to the Gulf country.

Over 50 complaints have been made over contract breaches in Saudi in the past 12 months amid rumours several high-profile players could follow Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema to the Saudi Pro League.

The Athletic says ex-Premier League striker Lewis Grabban has been involved in a case at Al Ahli after he accused the club of failing to pay him $400 000 (R7.4 million) in a combination of wages and a signing-on fee prior to his deal being terminated.

Grabban did not make any appearances under Pitso Mosimane this past season, but he has since been given back some of the money he was owed by Al Ahli, who will reportedly be banned from registering new players for the next two transfer windows.

FIFPro warns that with no player's union in place in Saudi Arabia, there is little protection in place for footballers who experience similar problems in the country, unlike in England.

Riyad Mahrez and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang have been linked with switches to Al Ahli following their recent promotion to the Saudi Pro League.

Mosimane himself recently said he had not been paid regularly since joining the club in 2022.
