Renard: I Said No To Senegal Because...

Two-time Africa Cup of Nations-winning head coach Herve Renard has revealed why he decided against taking the Senegalese national team coaching role.

The Frenchman was recently reappointed as the Saudi Arabian national team head coach, his first job since leaving the French national women's team after the 2024 Olympic games.

Whenever the 56-year-old is on the market, he seems to garner a lot of interest from various national teams, especially in Africa.

His prominence is justified, given that he has won the AFCON twice, first with Zambia in 2012 and then with Ivory Coast in 2015. The last time he coached an African nation was Morocco, where he spent three years and before taking up his current post with Saudi Arabia, he came very close to returning to the continent.

The Senegalese Football Federation were keen on bringing him in after they parted ways with Aliou Cisse and Renard wanted to join the west African giants, but they could not fulfil his one desire.

"There were discussions," the Aix-les-Bains native said, as per Afrik Foot.

"I had a wish, to have Omar Daf, a former Senegalese international, as an assistant.

"But Omar is the coach of Amiens, in Ligue 2. And this condition was not possible to fulfil immediately. So I decided at that precise moment to withdraw my candidacy.

"For the moment, Senegal has not yet chosen. Coaching Senegal, one of the best African teams, would have been a great challenge, it's true, but all the conditions were not right." he added.
