Tributes have poured in from around the world for Peter Rufai, the 1994 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) winner, who passed away at the age of 61.

3 July 2025 was a day of tragedies in the footballing world as the former Nigerian goalkeeper passed away on the same day as Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, who died in a car accident in Spain.
Rufai enjoyed a stellar 16-year playing career, taking his talents all over the world. He featured for Lokeren and Beveren in Belgium, Go Ahead Eagles in the Netherlands, Hercules and Deportivo La Coruna in Spain, and Farense and Gil Vincente in Portugal, according to Transfermarkt.
He was capped 65 times for the Nigerian national team, scoring one goal for the national team in a 1994 AFCON qualifying game.
The Super Eagles went on to win the 1994 AFCON, beating Zambia in the final as Rufai played alongside fellow Nigerian legends such as Jay-Jay Okocha, Sunday Oliseh and Daniel Amokachi, according to World Football.
Tributes poured in for the goalkeeper, who lost his life after battling a long illness.
