Namibia Coach: We Are Not As Fortunate As Bafana

Namibia Coach: We Are Not As Fortunate As Bafana

Collin Benjamin has claimed that Namibia are not as fortunate as South Africa when it comes to qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Following Namibia's goalless draw with South Africa on the weekend, head coach Collin Benjamin claimed the Brave Warriors do not share the same fortunes as Bafana Bafana.

Neither side was able to find the back of the net in their international friendly at Orlando Stadium on Saturday, with the home nation enjoying 71% of the possession and getting six shots on target compared to Namibia's one.

Currently sitting atop Group C, the Brave Warriors look set to qualify for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, unless Cameroon and Burundi play out a high-scoring draw in their qualifier on Tuesday.

Speaking after Namibia's goalless draw this past weekend, Benjamin admitted that booking a place in the tournament early next year would be massive for his team considering the struggles they have experienced.

"It will be huge [to qualify], if you look at our history we are not as fortunate as our big brothers up here [Bafana]. We cannot just qualify like that," he said, according to The Citizen.

"It takes a lot of hard work, if you look at our history we were there in 2008 and then in 2019.

"If we do it again four years later, it will be an achievement, especially if you look at where we have come from."

Benjamin also bemoaned Peter Shalulile's absence in Orlando, but added that the Mamelodi Sundowns frontman's unavailability did allow him to give chances to other players coming in.

"If you have a striker of his quality, you know one [of the chances] would go in. You can't replace that in the team. His team [Sundowns] is finding it difficult to replace him so how do you think it is for us?" he added.

"For us, it gives other opportunities to players that they have to take. You can only learn from these matches, you have to go into the middle of the area and put it in.
