The Bafana Bafana star enjoyed a highly successful spell with the Red Devils. During his time in Cairo, the Witbank-born forward won 11 trophies with the Club of the Century and also claimed individual honours, most notably the 2023 CAF Interclubs Player of the Year award.
Despite his success in Egypt, Al Ahly parted ways with the South African attacker at the beginning of the year. At the time, it was speculated that then-head coach Marcel Koller had grown dissatisfied with the player’s performances and influenced the club’s decision to release him.
Now, former head of Al Ahly’s planning committee, Mohsen Saleh, has slammed the Swiss tactician for offloading key players — including Tau — without securing adequate financial compensation.
“After Ricardo Soares' departure, we thought of a replacement, and Marcel Koller had a solid résumé, which is why we signed him. However, he also had his own flaws,” Saleh told Al Masry Al Youm.
“Marcel Koller was the reason for eliminating players and causing Al Ahly to lose millions due to transfers and players.
