An Asante Kotoko star hopes to surprise Kaizer Chiefs this coming weekend.

An Asante Kotoko star has issued a bold statement ahead of their upcoming Toyota Cup clash, claiming that the Ghanaian giants are aiming to surprise Kaizer Chiefs.

This weekend, Amakhosi will play their first pre-season fixture on African soil when they face the Porcupine Warriors in the second edition of the Toyota Cup. The Soweto giants recently returned from their Netherlands training camp, where they faced Vitesse, Utrecht, NEC Nijmegen, PEC Zwolle and Twente FC — winning just one of those matches.

With their Betway Premiership campaign set to kick off in two weeks' time away to Stellenbosch FC, the match at Athlone Stadium provides a valuable opportunity for Chiefs to build momentum.

Their opponents, Kotoko, are eager to make a statement. Last year, Chiefs suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat to Tanzania’s Young Africans in the inaugural edition of the tournament, and Porcupine Warriors striker Kwame Opoku believes they can spring another upset.

“We all know that Asante Kotoko is one of the biggest clubs in Africa. So ahead of every game, we try to do well, we want to win every game for ourselves and for our supporters, so we want to win come Saturday to make our fans very happy,” the 26-year-old said, as per Wontumi Sports.

“I’ve been monitoring them from a distance. The last game they played we watched some of it, so [we're] looking forward to the coming game because we’ll also try to surprise them. I’m sure they will try to underrate us, but at the end it’s football — anything can happen — so we’ll do as much as possible to surprise them this coming Saturday.”
