When Ka Bo Yellow cut ties with Manqoba Mngqithi, they also deemed Folz surplus to requirements. Shortly after his departure from the Tshwane-based outfit, the Frenchman resurfaced on the other side of the continent, having taken up a new role with Algerian club Olympique Akbou — not as a coach, but as sporting director.
However, Folz soon stepped in and aided the technical team which propelled them to safety.
The club were flirting with relegation at the time of his arrival, but managed to avoid the drop by the end of the campaign. Folz has now revealed how he ended up in North Africa.
“So, when I left South Africa and Sundowns, I had direct contact with the club,” he told DZ Foot.
“The president contacted me personally—I don't know how he got my number, but football is a small world, everyone knows each other.
“So, he called me to talk a little about the club's project, explain the prospects, the recent history, and the ambitions. Initially, the discussions concerned next season.
“But given the dynamic the team was starting to get bogged down in, I quickly understood that something had to be done this season to avoid a catastrophe.

“So we negotiated for a few weeks to reach an agreement, because I was also engaged with another party as a technical expert. We had to find a formula that would allow me to start earlier and save the club — which we managed to do.”
