A picture of the 35-year-old holding a Russian Premier League side FC Amkar side, alongside the message "Today, Belek, Turkey. More details later," appeared on the club's social media account.
Many news outlets believed Eto'o had completed a transfer from his current club Antalyaspor to Amkar, whose boss had previously made the African the highest paid footballer at Anzhi Makhachkala.
However, Eto'o himself later revealed on his own social media accounts that the shirt was just a present for his 36th birthday in March.
Amkar's sporting director, Igor Rezvukhin, later also explained that there was no truth in the surprise transfer news – for now.
"Eto'o is our friend, don't try to find something more in this case," he told Sport Express.
"Our coach knows Samuel so they decided to take a photo. Is Eto'o coming to Amkar? Of course not. In the future? It is sport, it is football, so who knows?"
Eto'o played for Makhachkala between 2011 and 2013, reportedly receiving a then world record annual net salary of €20 million (R287 million), but later left when the club fell into financial turmoil.
