Cameroon 'Face' AFCON Ban Amid Age-Cheating Scandal

Cameroon 'Face' AFCON Ban Amid Age-Cheating Scandal

Cameroon could reportedly be facing the prospect of being banned from multiple Africa Cup of Nations tournaments amid an age-cheating scandal.

The Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT) has taken the serious action of suspending 62 players within the country, as well as Wilfried Nathan Douala, who went with the Indomitable Lions to the previous AFCON.

Douala, who was said to be 17 years old, was a surprise addition to Rigobert Song's squad. However, FECAFOOT has accused the Victoria United man of having misrepresented his age, and it has led to his disqualification from playing in the Elite League's play-off games.

Furthermore, his inclusion in Cameroon's most recent AFCON squad could have severe consequences for the national team's future prospects of playing in the tournament if indeed Douala is found guilty.

According to Goal, CAF has strict punishments for such violations and if fraud is proven, the national team in question could be suspended from participating in the next two AFCON competitions.

If it is due to an administrative error, though, the suspension could only be for one tournament. Victoria United claim it is likely the latter after they released a statement which to deny allegations that Douala has more than one identity.

"We believe that this might be an error from the FECAFOOT," a club statement read. "We call on our supporters to remain calm as we have submitted the necessary documents to justify that the players do not have a double identity."
