Onana To Make AFCON U-Turn?

Onana To Make AFCON U-Turn?

Manchester United shot-stopper Andre Onana is reportedly reconsidering his participation at the looming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) amid his bad run of form with the club.

According to ESPN, the 27-year-old is reluctant to commit to the Indomitable Lions for the continental showpiece that is set to take in January.

The Cameroon international retired from international football during the 2022 FIFA World Cup after falling out with head coach Rigobert Song, but is rumoured to have been pressured into making a return by the Cameroonian Football Federation as well as the nation's government for their crunch AFCON 2023 qualifier against Burundi in September.

The five-time AFCON winners successfully booked their spot for Ivory Coast following a 3-0 win in that tie, but it seems the former Ajax Amsterdam and Inter Milan No. 1 is not enthusiastic to represent his country at the continental contest as his main focus is now believed to be adapting within the Red Devils set-up.

Cameroon, who are considered among the competition favourites for the showpiece in Ivory Coast, are expected to go far in the tournament, meaning that Onana could miss up to an entire month of action with the record Premier League champions at a crucial time of the season.

The Nkol Ngok native has been at fault for some high-profile errors for the Mancunians too, mainly in the UEFA Champions League against Bayern Munich and Galatasaray, and reportedly wants to show his commitment to the club by staying at Old Trafford at the beginning of 2024.

The same report claims that before he completed his move to Old Trafford, the La Masia alumni told Erik ten Hag that he had no intention of returning to the national team, but despite that, it is believed the Dutchman will not pressure him into making a decision regarding his AFCON 2023 participation.
