CAF Re-Open Bidding Process For 2025 AFCON

CAF Re-Open Bidding Process For 2025 AFCON

With Guinea no longer hosting the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, Africa's football governing body, CAF, has reopened the bidding process for nations who wish to host the continental showpiece.

Mane Reveals Reason Behind 'Struggles' At Bayern

Last week, Guinea was stripped of the rights to host Africa's most prestigious tournament, with CAF president Patrice Motsepe deeming the west African nation's infrastructure and facilities inadequate to host a competition of that magnitude.

The rights withdrawal was announced after a meeting on Friday in Conakry between Guinea's interim president, Mamady Doumbouya, and Motsepe.

"I visited Guinea today out of respect to the people of Guinea to discuss CAF's willingness to advise and work together with the football stakeholders to construct and build football infrastructure and facilities in this country," the former Mamelodi Sundowns chief said, as per CAF's official website.

"This will enable Guinea to bid with other competing nations for the African Nations Championships ('CHAN') which will take place after the CHAN to be hosted by Algeria in 2023, in light of the decision by CAF not to proceed with the TotalEnergies AFCON 2025 in Guinea."

Following an executive committee meeting in Algeria, CAF has since announced a re-opening of the the bidding process for the 2025 edition of the tournament.

Over the past decade, the nation that won the bid to host the AFCON did not actually go on to host the tournament – Gabon and Equatorial Guinea, in 2012, were the last nations to successfully bid and host the competition.
