On Monday, Athletic Bilbao released a statement confirming that talisman Inaki Williams would not be travelling to join the Ghanaian national team after he sustained an injury.

As per the club's official website, the press release reads: "The Athletic Club player Inaki Williams has been assessed by the red-and-white medical services early in the day in Lezama and presents a general condition that requires him to rest. He has received treatment."

According to Relevo, Williams was expected to travel to Kumasi, Ghana, on Monday, Chris Hughton's camp for the upcoming AFCON set to begin on Tuesday.

The news came hours after the Black Stars head coach named Bilbao's top goalscorer so far this season in his 23-man squad that will be headed to neighbouring Ivory Coast for the continental showpiece.

The Spanish outfit did, however, also clarify in the statement that they are in communication with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) with regards to Williams' injury and that the attacker will travel as soon as possible.

The abovementioned Spanish publication also revealed that the club tried to keep the 29-year-old for their league clash against Sevilla on Thursday, but that request was denied by the Ghana Football Association as they want to have the pacey forward in camp well before their friendly against Namibia on 8 January.
