Liverpool defender Joel Matip was the biggest name among the eight Cameroonians who refused to represent their country in Gabon despite being called up.

The 25-year-old remained at his club, who thought the player had retired from international football. However, Matip just refused to play due a personal conflict with the previous coaching regime, according to Squawka.

Despite the noise around Matip, and the seven others, who snubbed their call-ups, as well as an ongoing bonus payment row, the Indomitable Lions lifted the trophy on Sunday after beating Egypt 2-1.

Their coach, Hugo Bross couldn't resist a minor dig at his absentees, saying they might regret their decision now.

"There was a lot of trouble before, players who wouldn't come with us," Broos said, as quoted by ESPN.

"OK, it's their decision. But maybe they are saying now to themselves, 'S---! Why didn't I go with them?'"

Andre Onana (Ajax Amsterdam), Guy Ndy Assembe (Nancy), Allan Nyom (West Brom), Maxime Poundje (Bordeaux), Andre Zambo Anguissa (Marseille), Ibrahim Amadou (Lille) as well as Schalke's Eric Choupo-Moting are the other players who rejected their call-ups and missed out on the chance to lift the African Cup of Nations.
