Africa Cup of Nations - Group B
Result: Algeria 1-2 Tunisia
Date: 19 January 2017
Venue: Stade de Franceville
Riyad Mahrez and his Algerian compatriots failed to impress, as they suffered a 2-1 defeat to Tunisia in their second Africa Cup of Nations Group B clash.
Both sides were hoping for a victory, after Algeria drew with Zimbabwe, while Tunisia were defeated by Senegal.
The Algerians got off to an encouraging start and nearly went ahead after five minutes but Aymen Mathlouthi produced a superb save to keep out Aissa Mandi's header.
The encounter sparked into life after 20 minutes, as Tunisia went close through Ahmed Akaichi, before Riyad Mahrez forced Mathlouthi into a good save.
There was a good tempo to the encounter, although both sides failed to find the back of the net in the opening 45 minutes, with Tunisia failing to register a single effort on target.
However, the Tunisian's broke the deadlock in the 49th minute when Aissa Mandi deflected Mesakni Msakni's cross into his own net.
The Eagles of Carthage were eventually handed a penalty after 65 minutes when Wahbi Khazri was brought down. Naim Sliti stepped and converted the spot-kick, 2-0.
Algeria opted for a chance after the 74th minute as the ineffective Yacine Brahimi was replaced by Sofiane Hanni.
Islam Slimani could have reduced the deficit in the 83rd minute, but the Leicester City striker could only fire into the side-netting from close range.
Algeria pulled a goal back in stoppage time courtesy of a fine strike from Hanni, but it proved to be nothing more than a consolation, as Tunisia held on for the win.
