Chiefs Apologise For Spectator Misconduct

Chiefs Apologise For Spectator Misconduct

Fans react to the police during the 2023 Carling Black Label Knockout match between Kaizer Chiefs and AmaZulu at FNB Stadium, Johannesburg on 21 October 2023

Kaizer Chiefs have apologised for the latest incident involving the behaviour of their fans at stadiums following the Mamelodi Sundowns match over the weekend.

As Amakhosi lost to Sundowns 4-0 in the Carling Knockout Cup at FNB Stadium on Saturday, a section of fans threw objects onto the field while the match was on, while others ran onto the pitch in what appeared to be an attack on referee Luxolo Badi.

In one incident, Chiefs goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari appeared to be targeted as one of the fans who jumped the boards and onto the pitch seemed to be directed after him until he was stopped from his actions by the security personnel.

In recent months, Chiefs have had to face the wrath of the PSL and fined for similar incidents where fans failed to control themselves and adhere to the rules.

The Soweto giants have issued a statement apologising for the latest incident.

"Kaizer Chiefs would like to sincerely apologise to all our stakeholders, sponsors, the Premier Soccer League (PSL), South African Football Association (SAFA), and our loyal supporters for the disappointing incidents witnessed on Saturday during the Carling Knockout Cup quarter-final match against Mamelodi Sundowns," reads the statement, as it appears on the club's official X account.

"While it was a beautiful day for football, it was unfortunately marred by behaviour that has no place in our beloved game. The invasion of the pitch and the throwing of missiles onto the field are completely unacceptable. Despite thorough preparations for the sold-out match, we observed issues arising early on, with some supporters already under the influence of alcohol before the game, leading to unwanted incidents. This highlights a pressing societal issue that the football industry and our communities must address collectively," concluded the statement.
