Kaizer Chiefs legend Brian Baloyi believes that should both captains, Itumeleng Khune and Tefu Mashamaite, leave Amakhosi, the club would battle to win titles.
In this week’s edition of Soccer Laduma, Baloyi mentioned that the club's defence has been the back-bone of the team and that they may need to sign younger players if the likes of Masha and Itu were to leave the team.
“The back four has been the back-bone of the team. With Morgan Gould being injury prone, you’d like to see Tefu Mashamaite sign a new deal. Ivan Bukenya hasn’t played much and we’ve only seen him in midfield. We don’t know how good he is in the heart of defence. If they win the league and lose key players like Itumeleng Khune and Tefu, It’ll be very hard to win titles in future,” Baloyi said.
“There are talks about Chiefs being interested in Rivaldo Coetzee. If Tefu or Morgan were to leave, they’d still need to get young players in the team. I always believe the older and more experienced the defence is, the more likely you are to win leagues.”
He also mentioned that the only way we would see younger or fringe players get a run in the team is if we win the league title as early as possible.
"The only way other back-up defenders like Lorenzo Gordinho or Simphiwe Mtsweni will play is if Chiefs wrap up the title early in the next few games. Then the youngsters can play to get some experience,” Baloyi added.
Having said that, do you agree with Baloyi when he says that the club would struggle without Itu and Masha?
