The supporters could not be happier after wrapping up the 2014/2015 Absa Premiership title. For now, we cannot complain and the state Euphoria will last until the final game of the season. Likewise, many players in the squad have all but reached full potential and satisfied the fans with what they had to offer.
Nonetheless, how long will some of our veterans continue to thrill? Not very long in all honesty.
I believe that our squad, as from next season, could begin to disintegrate - not only with age being the number one factor, but we need to remember they need to stay motivated.
Most of these players, like Tsepo Masilela, Siboniso Gaxa, Reneilwe Letsholonyane, Willard Katsande, Siphiwe Tshabalala and Tefu Mashamaite have won the league before and to maintain the hunger heading in the latter stages of their playing careers will become increasingly difficult.
This, however, does not mean we need a whole new set of players but rather new ambition, which is why the issue of winning the CAF Champions League will never go away until we actually have a taste of what it’s like to claim continental glory. With new priorities, players will have something to play for and add to an already colourful career.
We can draw comparisons to English rising power Manchester City. For the last five years or so, they have been staking their claim as a European football force. They have been highly successful domestically and that is because of a core of players who have been playing together for quite some time. Now though, they look lacklustre and feel less motivated in winning silverware compared to years gone by.
Much like the players at City, many of our players may begin to feel less motivated going into the final lap of their careers.
Do you feel that we need a fresher squad, or is it a case of the club setting new goals and ambitions?
