The story
Masandawana's 1-0 win over Esperance de Tunis in the CAF Champions League was marred by post-match violence at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
Both sets of fans were seen clashing on the stands with Downs fan, Siboniso Masango, providing the silver lining to the ugly scenes by saving a desperate Esperance de Tunis supporter from a life-threatening drop.
"I'm a football fan and that's not what you want to see at a stadium. No football match is worth dying over and what happened yesterday is just mind boggling to me," said Masango poignantly, as he recounted the incident on the latest episode of Sundowns' Pitchside Podcast.
"Let's enjoy the game, let's make jokes and laugh but violence is a no," he added. The start of the podcast plays an audio where Masango is heard saying repeatedly, "I was not going to let you go, I'm so sorry."
Masango is a 28-year-old Sports Management graduate from Mamelodi, according to local media and on the podcast, he revealed that he and the Esperance fan cried in each other's arms after the dramatic rescue.
Despite receiving plenty of love on social media for his selfless efforts, Masango mentioned that he ran 30-40 meters rescue the save the Tunisian fan.
"He was slowly losing his grip, I ran to him and the first thing I did was to grab his forearm. I grabbed his forearm so he can adjust his grab and balance, because his hand was slipping.
"In that moment, he says to me, 'Please, please my brother, don't do it, I have three kids. That's what went through his mind, that I was there to finish him off. I assured him that, 'Don't worry, I won't let you go. I told him that I will pull up his bag and he should lift up his knees. The guy could barely speak English," shared Masango to hosts, Hlompho Kekana and Tiyani Mabunda.
"While trying to help him, I'm still being attacked, I'm helping someone else but I'm being attacked. Bottles were still being thrown at me. We both didn't know what was going to happen next. I took him to the back and offered him water. We had a heartfelt moment and cried in each other's arms," added Masango.
