In with the new, out with the old, Italian giants AC Milan and Inter Milan have unveiled plans to a new state-of-the-art stadium that will replace the legendary San Siro.
The construction or renovation of stadiums has been on an upward trend in Europe. More recently, Tottenham Hotspur built their new ground that is named after the club and it replaced White Hart Lane.
Now, Milan and Inter will have a stunning 60 000-seat stadium called The Cathedral which will open in 2027.
This new piece of architecture will bring a mostly likely heartfelt end to Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, popularly known as San Siro. The arena hosted the titanic 2015/16 UEFA Champions League final between Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid.
The new structure is said to be designed by architects Populous, who also contributed to the design of England's main football venue Wembley Stadium.
The demolishing of the classic San Siro has expectedly received mixed reviews but Milan's chief executive Ivan Gazidis insists that the building of a new facility is necessary.
"I understand the doubts, because San Siro is a special place, but it's necessary to have courage," Gazidis told the club's website.
"Feelings exist and cannot be questioned. The memories of San Siro will be there forever, no one will be able to erase them, it's impossible."
"Every league in the world that has been successful has done so by building new stadiums, with an incredible and inclusive experience for the fans"
"We have everything that is needed: the football, the people, fans. I see a brilliant future, you just need to have courage."
"Creating new stadiums is a fundamental step if we want to be at the top of the football world again."
