Khune: SA’s Best GK? The Veteran Still Thinks So

Khune: SA’s Best GK? The Veteran Still Thinks So

Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana icon Itumeleng Khune remains confident that he is still the best goalkeeper in South African football.

Despite the rise of Ronwen Williams, whose achievements include captaining Bafana to AFCON bronze and winning multiple awards, Khune believes his experience and legacy set him apart.

Williams, the Mamelodi Sundowns skipper, made history last year as the first South African nominated for the Yashin Trophy at the Ballon d'Or.

He also secured the African Goalkeeper of the Year award and was named Goalkeeper of the Tournament at AFCON.

Khune, with 91 international caps, was Mzansi's undisputed number one for over a decade. However, after leaving Chiefs, the 37-year-old remains without a club, working as an analyst and ambassador.

In a recent blind ranking challenge, Khune placed Williams to second place behind himself, reaffirming his belief that he is still Mzansi's top shot-stopper.

When asked why he ranked himself as Mzansi's best, Khune said, "I've worked hard, won trophies, and made my mark in South African football. I respect all the other great keepers on the list, but I've earned my place at number one"

Khune's final ranking was as follows:

1.     Itumeleng Khune (Kaizer Chiefs) – Nedbank Cup winner (2013)

2.     Ronwen Williams (Mamelodi Sundowns) – Nedbank Cup winner (2011, 2016 and 2017)

3.     Denis Onyango (Mamelodi Sundowns) – Nedbank Cup winner (2015, 2020 and 2022)

4.     Moeneeb Josephs (Orlando Pirates) – Nedbank Cup winner (2011)

5.     Elvis Chepezeze (Magesi FC)
