The story

Former SuperSport United midfielder Jesse Donn has expressed gratitude for the clubs he played for as he reflects on his football career after retiring at the age of 25.

Donn parted ways with SuperSport United in July 2024 and was seen training with TS Galaxy before the start of this season, ultimately making the surprising decision to step away from the game.

Donn joined Matsatsantsa in July 2019 from Western Cape side Ubuntu Football, having been scouted during a Nedbank Cup match. During his time at SuperSport, he made 71 appearances across all competitions and scored three goals.

In addition, Donn was named SuperSport's Young Player of the Season for the 2021/22 campaign and received a call-up to the Bafana Bafana squad for the 2021 World Cup Qualifiers.

The retired midfielder was one of the guests on SABC's "Sport @ 10" show and looked back fondly on the major steps he took during his career.

"It was an amazing time, I'm really privileged to have been able to do what I did for a living. I never took this for granted and with the decision that I have made, some people might think I took it for granted," he said.

"It wasn't a financial decision or one that I felt indifferent about. It took a lot of 'heart work' for me and a lot of introspection. But what a beautiful time, I'm really grateful for the people at SuperSport for what they contributed to my career and who I am as a person," shared Donn.

In an interview with Power FM last month, Donn shared that his decision to retire from football was influenced by his faith journey, which he feels has been guided by God along with his family.

He explained that he and his wife made the decision to stay in Gauteng to build their family and chose not to pursue offers from outside the province.
