Arsenal's Title Hopes Slipping After Failing To Beat Man Utd

Arsenal's Title Hopes Slipping After Failing To Beat Man Utd

Arsenal's Premier League title hopes continue to slip away after drawing 1-1 with Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday evening.

Premier League

Result: Manchester United 1-1 Arsenal

Date: 09 March 2025

Venue: Old Trafford

Rasmus Hojlund dropped to the bench as Christian Eriksen was recalled to the Red Devils starting line-up, while Victor Lindelöf started in the Premier League for the first time this year.

The Gunners enjoyed a lot of the possession in the early stages of the first half, which resulted in a chance for Mikel Merino on 14 minutes but the Spanish midfielder sent a low strike just wide of the upright. United, meanwhile, defended quite deep in their own for large parts of the first half and had not other attacking outlet except Alejandro Garnacho out wide but he was left frustrated on numerous occasions.

However, United got the breakthrough on the stroke of halftime when captain Bruno Fernandes found the back of the net with a superb free-kick from around 25 yards out.

The hosts should have doubled their advantage eight minutes after the break when Diogo Dalot broke free down the left before picking out Noussair Mazraoui, who saw his volley brilliantly saved by Gunners goalkeeper David Raya at point-blank range.

Gunners coach Mikel Arteta responded with a double change soon thereafter as Ethan Nwaneri and Riccardo Calafiori made way for the returning Gabriel Martinelli and Myles Lewis-Skelly.

The visitors did get back on level terms with 15 minutes to play in the second half as Jurrien Timber weaved his way into the box before teeing up Declan Rice, who sent a fine first-time strike into the far corner.

United nearly snatched the winning goal in second-half stoppage time when Mazraoui broke into the box and pulled the ball back for Fernandes, who saw his strike cleared off the line by Raya as the encounter ended all square.

Here's how they line up:

Manchester United: Onana, Lindelof, De Ligt, Yoro, Mazraoui, Casemiro, Eriksen, Fernandes, Dalot, Zirkzee, Garnacho

Arsenal: Raya, Timber, Saliba, Gabriel, Calafiori, Rice, Partey, Odegaard, Trossard, Merino, Nwaneri
