Difference Between Pitso, Rulani & Manqoba At Downs

Difference Between Pitso, Rulani & Manqoba At Downs

Mamelodi Sundowns are seemingly setting up their coaches for failure, if an alleged practice by Sporting Director Flemming continues.

The biggest reason why former coach Pitso Mosimane was successful at at the club and laid a foundation of dominance in the domestic scene, is because he had complete control on the signings made by the club, incoming and outgoing.

However, since the appointment of Berg just over two years ago, the policy has changed, as coaches no longer have that carte blanche and transfer decisions are made from the top.

The departure of former coach Rulani Mokwena was allegedly due to him not being on the same page with Berg regarding playing personnel.

It is not surprising that former head coach Manqoba Mngqithi still believes Sundowns is pretty much on the same level as other teams in the PSL, because the record transfers made by the club such as Marcelo Allende (R51 million), Matias Esquivel (R46 million) and Arthur Sales (R62 million), among others, are not the coach's recommendations.

Mngqithi admitted in an interview on 947's MSW that his only signing at the club was Iqraam Rayners.

"It's how much focus you put in little details, regardless of how big or small a team is. Because this thing of a team is big, this team is small, I've looked at so many teams in the PSL and when I look at the material, pound for pound and I say, the difference is so minute," Mngqithi said on 947's MSW.

"That is why the PSL has got such surprising results, that is why the PSL is becoming so interesting, because the margins are very slim.

"It's just [about] who recruits well and understand exactly what he needs to gather in the shop window. There are small teams that I think are smarter than even big teams," Mngqithi added.

If the big money foreign signings by Sundowns were recommended by coaches, Mngqithi would not say the difference between the Brazilians and other teams is actually marginal.

Unless coaches at Masandawana gain control of transfers at the club, when it comes to accountability, it will always be a case of trying to fit square pegs into round holes.
